Ex-pro football player Big John Bates now practices law. He led his college team to a 13-3 record and twice won the MVP Award, for the second time in 1994 — which was also the year he graduated from law school. Injuries precluded a promising professional career in football but did not stop him from a successful law career.
Bates’ father was a corporate counsel attorney, which, after many curious childhood visits to his father’s office, influenced his decision to pursue a law degrees in graduate school.
“I think there was a natural affinity to become a lawyer,” Bates says. “With my dad being a lawyer, in my mind, I think, I was always going to go to law school.”
